Hawkeye producer calls Echo a “badass” ahead of Disney+ series and solo spinoff

November 18, 2021 by EJ Moreno

It’s a good sign when Marvel green lights a solo series before the character even debuts. That’s the case with the upcoming Echo series, which will be set in the world of the Hawkeye series and starring newcomer Alaqua Cox as the deaf superhero Maya Lopez.

The news doesn’t come as much of a surprise to Hawkeye producer Trinh Tran though, as she’s looking forward to the spinoff. That doesn’t mean she isn’t nervous about the Echo show, but she has faith it will stick with viewers.

“[Alaqua] is such a badass in this series. She really completely impressed us all with her determination and hard work in wanting to make sure Maya Lopez is the way everybody wants. I have to say there was a bit of nervousness at the beginning because Alaqua hasn’t been a part of the industry,” says Tran to Murphy’s Multiverse. “To get somebody brand new and pull her into a character like Maya Lopez, it’s a big deal. But she took it in strides, worked hard, and proved to us that there is a character who’s deaf but is able to be a part of the MCU and be a superhero in her own right.”

At this point, little is known about the Echo series, although Marvel did unveil the show’s logo during Disney+ Day this month. The series will follow Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez, a.k.a. Echo, who in the comic books is the adoptive daughter of Kingpin and one of the most prominent deaf superheroes. You can see Echo in the upcoming series Hawkeye, which premieres during Thanksgiving week.

Former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Maybe with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a Super Hero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit.

Hawkeye sees Jeremy Renner returning as Clint Barton alongside Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee) as Kate Bishop, Florence Pugh (Black Widow) as Yelena Belova, Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) as Eleanor Bishop, Fra Fee (Les Miserables) as Kazi, Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul) as Jack Duquesne, Zahn McClarnon (Fargo) as William Lopez and newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez.
