Indiana Jones 5 producer praises new director James Mangold, says work on script has only “just started”

May 26, 2020 by EJ Moreno

2022 will see the return of Indiana Jones on the big screen, as we see James Mangold stepping in for Steven Spielberg in the director’s chair for the fifth film, marking the first time anyone other than the legendary director will helm an entry in the franchise.

In an interview with Collider, producer Frank Marshall opened up about that transition from Spielberg to Mangold and praised the Logan and Ford v Ferrari director on his work:

“His love of the franchise. He’s a wonderful filmmaker. I think he also has a relationship with Harrison. It was all of the right pieces coming together, at the right time,” says Marshall. “Steven is staying on as a producer, so we’ve got the best of everything.”

Though it came as a surprise to many people that during the interview given that the sequel has been in the works for several years now and was actually gearing up to shoot this Spring under Spielberg, Marshall alluded that the current script is still very early in the process, stating that work has “just started.”

That seems to imply that Mangold is planning a different creative direction for the series than Spielberg, perhaps even a page one rewrite, and that could be precisely what the film needs right now.

Indiana Jones 5 is tentatively set for release on July 29th, 2022, and will see Harrison Ford return to the titular role. This movie will mark the first installment in the franchise since 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
