Inferno collapses and bombs as Boo! A Madea Halloween tops the box office again

October 31, 2016 by admin

Inferno took a tumble at the box office from Friday to Sunday and fell victim to Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween, which topped the U.S. charts for a second week.

Directed by Ron Howard, Inferno opened well on Friday to $5.6 million and held that on to Saturday with $5.7, but collapsed on Sunday with just $3.6 million to earn $14.9 million overall. It’s Rotten Tomato score of 20% and CinemaScore of B+ clearly had an impact, as negative reviews [read ours here, here and here] and mediocre word of mouth caused a meltdown for the film’s box office.

Inferno‘s opening weekend is well-below the $46 million earned by Angels & Demons and a far-cry from The Da Vinci Code‘s $77 million.

Just as it did last week, Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween survived against big names and took the weekend with an estimated $16.6 million, a small 41% drop-off from its opening weekend. Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher: Never Look Back fell 58% to earn $9.5 million, Ben Affleck’s The Accountant maintained fourth place with $8.4 million, while horror sequel Ouija: Origin of Evil dropped 49% to take fifth place with $7 million.
