J.J. Abrams developing Justice League Dark, The Shining spin-off Overlook and an original series for HBO Max

April 17, 2020 by Ricky Church

J.J. Abrams, his wife Katie McGrath and their production company Bad Robot has just signed a big deal to develop three more television series for WarnerMedia and its upcoming streaming service HBO Max. Abrams will develop a Justice League Dark series as well as a spin-off from Stephen King’s The Shining titled Overlook and an original series called Duster.

Justice League Dark will be based upon the title of the same name in the DC comics universe. The Justice League Dark deals more with supernatural elements than the Justice League proper, with members usually consisting of magicians and/or supernatural beings like John Constantine, Zatanna and Swamp Thing. As for Abrams’ TV series, no information has been given as to which DC characters will appear in the show.

Overlook will mark the third time Abrams and Bad Robot have developed a series based upon Stephen King’s work after 11.22.63 and Castle Rock on Hulu. The series “is a horror-thriller series inspired by and featuring iconic characters from Stephen King’s masterpiece The Shining. Overlook explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction.”

The original series Duster will be co-written by J.J. Abrams and The Walking Dead’s LaToya Morgan. The series will be set in the 1970’s Southwest and focus on “the life of a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate goes from awful to wildly, stupidly, dangerously awful.”

“What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie,” said Kevin Reilly, HBO Max’s Chief Content Officer. “What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic I.P. from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max.”

Abrams, McGrath and Bad Robot already have a working relationship with Warner Bros. Television and HBO after producing the hit sci-fi series Westworld.
