J.J. Abrams teases Emperor Palpatine’s return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

September 1, 2019 by Samuel Brace

J.J. Abrams, the director of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, has teased the return of the saga’s main villain, Emperor Palpatine.

Palpatine has been the arch-foe of our heroes throughout the Skywalker saga, manipulating events and causing destruction throughout both the original and prequel trilogies. And now we know with The Rise of Skywalker, the emperor will be returning once more – he even takes pride of place in the film’s poster.

Why he is back or what he is up to, we don’t know just yet but director J.J. Abrams has teased Darth Sidious’ return and his importance to the film in a recent interview with MTV: “I will say that that’s part of what the story is, and also, I will say that with the Emperor around, he’s not going to be your, you know, the cuddly pal. I can’t wait for you to see how that plays out, but he’s in the poster for a reason.”

The Emperor’s return is certainly an exciting notion. Even though he is a villain, he holds a dear place in fans hearts and many can’t wait to see just what he gets up to in the saga’s final installment.
