James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water passes $2 billion at the global box office

January 22, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Although James Cameron has since admitted his comments about Avatar: The Way of Water needing to become “the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history” to break even were on the hyperbolic side, the long-awaited sequel is now fast approaching that landmark having become only the sixth movie ever to cross the $2 billion mark at the global box office.

This weekend’s figures aren’t finalised, but projections are putting The Way of Water at $2.024 billion worldwide by close of play today, meaning that Cameron has become the first and only filmmaker to have three titles top $2 billion following fellow box office juggernauts Titanic and Avatar. The latter remains the highest-grossing movie in history on $2.924 billion, a figure that’s surely too far for The Way of Water. Titanic’s $2.195 haul, not so much…

The Way of Water will soon overtake Avengers: Infinity War ($2.052) to break the all-time top five, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.071 billion) next up in fourth behind Titanic, Avengers: Endgame ($2.799 billion) and Avatar.

Avatar: The Way of Water is directed by James Cameron and sees Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Matt Gerald, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, and Sigourney Weaver all reprising their roles from the 2009 blockbuster, while new additions to the cast include Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Filip Geljo, Jamie Flatters, Bailey Bass, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Duane Evans Jr., Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Keston John, and CJ Jones.
