James Gunn explains how important it is that MCU heroes die

February 5, 2020 by Samuel Brace

James Gunn has explained the importance of heroes in the MCU being able to die, specifically in regards to his Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3.

For a film to work on a dramatic level, there has to be stakes involved. One of the ways that this can be achieved is by making it known that your heroes aren’t invulnerable. This is important for all movies but particularly for the superhero genre.

James Gunn, director of the planned Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, is a big proponent of killing off heroes and refuses to rule out killing some of the franchise’s main characters. Responding to a fan on Twitter who asked that Gunn avoid killing the main heroes, Gunn said:

“So you don’t think any characters in films should die? I can’t agree. I think films help us to deal with our own mortality and the mortality of those we love, and seeing that through the lens of story/fable/myth is of benefit to people. In addition, the death of some characters makes the survival of others more meaningful.”

Star Chris Pratt then chimed in, asking: “Why do I feel like this scenario wouldn’t end well for Star-lord?”

Gunn then responded: “Because you’re insightful.”

So, it certainly sounds like fans should expect some major characters to perish in the next film. But who will it be? Let us know your guesses in the comments below and on social media @flickeringmyth.
