James Gunn provides an update on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

June 5, 2018 by Gary Collinson

While Marvel is keeping its Phase Four plans very close to its chest, we do know that 2019’s Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel will be following in 2020 by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and writer-director James Gunn has provided a brief update on his progress with the threequel during a Facebook Q&A.

“I’m more than a year into the process, so the script is far along,” said Gunn. “For many many months I first write the treatment which is 80 pages or so with photographs. That turns into Guardians of the Galaxy. I’m now rewriting and making sure my rough draft works.”

Gunn went on to confirm that the proposed Disney/Fox acquisition will not impact his plans for Guardians Vol. 3 “in any major way” as he’s too far along development now.

He did stress however that we can expect the third movie to introduce some major changes to the team, presumably in the wake of the fallout from Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers 4:

“It’s very, very, very different. Very different, but I won’t say how! You’ll have to wait to see the movie, it’s a long time away.”

By the end of Infinity War, only Rocket Raccoon remained standing of the Guardians, although it seems very likely that Star-Lord, Groot, Drax and Mantis will be back once Earth’s Mightiest Heroes reverse the effects of Thanos’ snap. As for Gamora, that may be a different story…
