Jeremy Renner wasn’t told what happened to Hawkeye’s family when shooting Avengers: Endgame

June 19, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Because of the way Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War were shot, Jeremy Renner didn’t know what happened to Hawkeye’s family when they vanished.

We all know after seeing Infinity War that when people around the world vanished it was because of Thanos’ snap but as Endgame and Infinity War were shot in conjunction, Jeremy Renner wasn’t aware of what was happening.

The directors apparently decided to leave Renner in the dark when shooting the scene where Hawkeye’s family vanish, prompting an honest performance from the actor. Speaking at Celebrity Fan Fest in San Antonio, the actor said:

“When we did shoot that, we shot back and forth between movies. I remember shooting with my family, teaching my daughter how to shoot a bow and arrow and I turn around and they’re just gone. And I didn’t know what was happening, I really didn’t. I didn’t know what was happening in Infinity War and everyone turning to dust, I didn’t know that. So when I did that, we shot the scene and I was just like ‘Where did they go?’ because they just went away. They didn’t tell me.”

It was certainly a powerful way to open up Endgame and a truly sneaky tactic to help Renner’s performance.

Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Benedict Wong (Wong), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp), Letitia Wright (Shuri) and Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie).
