Johnny Depp reportedly dropped as Captain Jack Sparrow from next Pirates of the Caribbean film

October 27, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Earlier in the week it was reported that Disney has enlisted Deadpool screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to pen a “reboot” of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and now it seems we may have confirmation that we’ve seen the last of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow.

During an interview with The Daily Mail, original Pirates of the Caribbean screenwriter Stuart Beattie reportedly confirmed Depp’s departure from the series, with Beattie stating that: “I think he’s had a great run. Obviously, he’s made that character his own and it’s become the character he’s most famous for now. And kids all over the world love him as that character. So I think it’s been great for him, it’s been great for us, so I’m just very, very happy about it.”

Depp has portrayed Captain Jack Sparrow in five Pirates of the Caribbean movies, which have pulled in a combined $4.5 billion in worldwide box office receipts. The latest however, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, saw a dip in takings compared to its three predecessors; add in the bad press that’s surrounded Depp in recent times, and it is perhaps understandable why Disney feels the need to freshen up the franchise. However, whether a Pirates movie can succeed without its star attraction remains to be seen.
