Justice League suffers lowest opening weekend box office of the DC Extended Universe

November 19, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Warner Bros.’ long-awaited DC team-up Justice League has suffered a rather tough time at the U.S box office in its opening weekend, with the film grossing $96 million across the Friday-to-Sunday period.

While it’s obviously ridiculous to call a $96 million opening a disaster (it is an astronomical number after all), the film – which brings together DC’s most iconic characters – had been tracking between $110 million and $120 million, and instead debuted to the lowest opening weekend of the DC Extended Universe to date, and the second lowest opening weekend of 2017 for a superhero movie.

For comparison within the DCEU, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opened to $166 million, followed by Suicide Squad on $133.7 million, Man of Steel on $116.6 million and Wonder Woman on $103.3 million. In terms of the year’s other superhero blockbusters, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 leads the way with $146.5 million, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on $122.7 million, Spider-Man: Homecoming on $117 million, Wonder Woman on $103.3 million and Logan on $88 million.

Internationally, Justice League has pulled in an additional $185.5 million for a worldwide opening weekend of $281.5 million. That’s certainly nothing to be sniffed at, but with a $300 million budget, Justice League needs at least $600 million globally to put itself in the black. Wonder Woman certainly showed strong legs, but obviously it remains to be seen whether Justice League will manage to repeat that feat.

However you want to look at this, Warner Bros. must surely be asking itself some serious questions this evening. After all, if Justice League can’t crack the $100 million mark in its opening weekend, where is that going to leave the likes of Aquaman and Shazam?

What do you make of Justice League’s opening numbers? Can you see this having any impact on the DCEU going forward? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League will reunite Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and Robin Wright as General Antiope alongside J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard (The Danish Girl) as Mera, Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) as Vulko, Kiersey Clemons (Dope) as Iris West and Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones) as Steppenwolf.
