Katana slasher Tokyo Underground Killer launches on Steam

September 5, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Developer Phoenix Game Productions has announced the release of their neon-infused first-person katana slasher Tokyo Underground Killer on Steam. Play through a meaty story and take on enemies and bosses in epic katana-slashing battles through different areas of Tokyo. Watch the new trailer below…

Tokyo Underground Killer is a high-speed, first-person cyberpunk action game that takes players to a near-future, neon-drenched Tokyo, where they will journey through a deep storyline comprising 11 missions. Each mission is set in locations based on real locales in Tokyo (such as Shinjuku, Akihabara, and Shibuya), and a city hub featuring a variety of shops and mini-games to play, such as Pachinko or UFO Catchers. Between missions, players can chill out in their Shinjuku apartment.

Players step into the shoes of the “Shinjuku Vampire” hitman Kobayashi as he travels the city’s criminal underworld in a tale of survival and violence. Besides his deadly Katana “Jubokko”, Kobayashi can use 10 upgradable Blood Skills powered by his defeated enemies. He’s also able to use an array of weaponry, including shuriken launchers and cursed Japanese dolls.

The streets of future Tokyo are dangerous, and players will find an assortment of brutal gang bosses, vengeful idols, and manipulative cult leaders that need to be defeated, and with countless henchmen patrolling the streets.

There’s plenty to enjoy behind the scenes as well, including nearly 100 dynamic comic page scenes drawn by Hans “Heavy Metal Hanzo” Steinbach, over 25 voice actors in Japanese and English, including the legendary Hidekatsu Shibata (Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball), and more than 2 hours of original electronic music composed by Andrew Hulshult.

Tokyo Underground Killer is available on Steam now, with a 10% launch discount for the first week. There’s also a free demo available, featuring a selection of tutorial missions.
