Kevin Feige discusses Spider-Man’s five-movie arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

July 5, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Over the past few weeks, we’ve heard on several occasions that the deal between Marvel and Sony for Spider-Man’s inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will run through until the as-yet-untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel in 2019 (which also kicks off Phase Four of the MCU), and now producer and Marvel Studios supremo Kevin Feige has been chatting about the wall-crawler’s five movie arc during an interview with The Toronto Sun.

“We are looking at a five-movie storyline — Civil War, Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, untitled Avengers, Homecoming 2 — or whatever we end up calling it — as an amazing five-story journey for Peter Parker. In the way that the events of Civil War directly inform the opening of Homecoming and his state of mind as he goes back to high school, so too will the events of the next two Avengers movies as he continues with high school. This original 22-movie arc ends with the untitled Avengers in May of 2019 and then two months later it will be Peter and Spider-Man that usher us into the aftermath and how things proceed from there.”

With Sony gearing up to launch its own shared SpiderVerse, it’s unclear what will happen with the web-slinger post-2019. However, Tom Holland has recently suggested that he’s under contract for a third solo movie with Marvel, and assuming Homecoming’s box office reflects its critical acclaim, one would have to imagine both parties will be keen to extend the deal for as long as possible.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May, alongside Marvel veterans Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Chris Evans as Captain America. New additions to the cast include Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Bokeem Woodbine, Tyne Daly, Michael Barbieri, Abraham Attah, Hannibal Buress, Kenneth Choi, Angourie Rice, Michael Chernus, Michael Mando, Logan Marshall-Green and Jennifer Connelly.
