Kevin Feige on why the Marvel movies don’t overlap anymore

April 28, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Way back during Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you may recall that many of the movies were taking place at the same time, and a plot-beat from one of these movies might have had its effect felt in a completely different one. However, post-Avengers, the MCU began following a more linear path. Perhaps that was inevitable given the fact that The Avengers had already “united”, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has recently spoken up to offer a more definitive reason.

Speaking to Cinema Blend, Feige said: “I think people like to talk about our long term plans, which we certainly have. But very rarely do those long term plans dictate the specificity of any individual film. It’s usually the opposite. It’s focusing on a story, and focusing on the individual movie that we’re making to do what’s best. And then, if something changes that we weren’t quite expecting down the line because it was made for a better movie, then we deal with it down the line. I think that’s what happened in Phase One. We were telling those stories and having the crossover of Nick Fury talking about the Southwest Region, when the hammer fell…”

So, what do you think? Do you miss the overlapping nature of Phase One, or are you happy with how the current MCU tells its stories? Let us know in the comments below!
