Kirsten Dunst on possibility of Mary Jane Watson return in Spider-Man: No Way Home

November 16, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

With next month’s Spider-Man: No Way Home set to see Spidey coming up against some of his most formidable foes from Sony’s past Spider-Man series, much of the chatter surrounding the film has been dominated by rumour/speculation/expectation that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will ultimately find himself joined in a climactic battle against a Multiversal Sinister Six by returning Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

When the rumours first began circulating about the potential return of Maguire and Garfield, it was also claimed that the two Peters would be joined by their respective love interests, Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy. As with Andrew Garfield, Stone denied the reports earlier this year, and now in an interview with Total Film, Dunst has followed suit, telling the outlet:

“I haven’t seen any of [the new Spider-Man movies]. I don’t watch superhero movies, though.  don’t watch anything like that, It’s just not my kind of movie. I can’t tell you the last time I saw one. I think I saw maybe Captain America with my friend in a theater, which was – what? – a long time ago when that first came out. I just don’t watch them. I’m not in that movie, no [laughs]. I know there’s rumors, right? No, I’m the only one [not in it]. Can’t put an old girl in there!”

Despite the denial (which counts for very little in the super-secretive world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe), Dunst went on to tell Variety that she wouldn’t be opposed to revisiting MJ should the opportunity arise (have arisen?), stating that: “I would do it. Why not? That would be fun. I would never say no to something like that. I’d be old MJ at this point with little Spidey babies”.

Unless tomorrow’s new trailer changes things, we’re likely just going to have to wait until the film’s release in December to find out how many of the rumoured returns actually come off. Would you like to see Dunst’s Old MJ among them? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: No Way Home sees Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home) directing Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Zendaya (MJ), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Jamie Foxx (Electro) and Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus).

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set for release on December 17th 2021.
