Lion director to helm new TRON movie with Jared Leto

August 11, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Last month one of Disney’s executives were quoted as stating that the Mouse House “feels like the timing is right now” for a third TRON movie, and now we have official confirmation that the studio is set for a return to the Grid.

As reported by Deadline, Garth Davis – director of the Best Picture-nominated 2016 drama Lion – is set to take the reins on the next instalment in the TRON franchise, with the previously announced Jared Leto still on board to lead the cast.

The first TRON was released in 1982, with Jeff Bridges taking on the role of a computer programmer who finds himself pulled into the virtual world of the Grid. Although not a hit upon release, the film quickly achieved cult status – in no small part due to its groundbreaking visual effects – with Disney then producing the sequel TRON: Legacy in 2010 to modest box office success.

Disney had originally greenlit a follow-up to TRON: Legacy which would have seen the return of director Joseph Kosinski and stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, but eventually pulled the plug and decided to hit the reset button back in 2017 by announcing a new project led by Oscar-winner Leto.

According to Deadline’s report, the new TRON movie is yet to officially receive the green light and remains in active development, although the appointment of Davis as director is seen as a major push in the right direction. Meanwhile, Jared Leto has confirmed the project on his social media channels, during which he referred to the movie as TRON: Ares.
