Magic Mike dances past Titanic and Avatar to top Super Bowl weekend box office

February 12, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Over the traditionally tough Super Bowl weekend, Channing Tatum’s striptease-swansong Magic Mike’s Last Dance took the top podium with a middling return of $8.2 million at the North American box-office.

It’s worth noting that Warner Bros. decided to release Steven Soderbergh’s trilogy-capper in only 1,500 domestic theatres, and although it performed worse than the 2012 original ($39 million) and 2015’s Magic Mike XXL ($27 million), Magic Mike’s Last Dance was originally intended as a direct-to-streaming release. Overseas audiences threw a further $10.4 million at the film’s feet, meaning that the $40 million budgeted movie had a global launch of $18.6 million.

Last weekend’s champ, M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin took a whopping 69% drop, almost falling out of the top half of the chart. It earned $5.5 million in its sophomore frame, which puts it neck-and-neck with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which also took home that amount. They’ll be a cat’s whisker in it when the final figures are tallied up, but it doesn’t bode well for the future of Shyamalan’s apocalyptic thriller considering Universal’s animation has been around for eight weeks, a few of those during which it has been available on VOD, and Ant-Man 3 drops next week.

Two films that needn’t worry about longevity could be found in the second and third spots. Both directed by James Cameron. One is holdover behemoth Avatar: The Way of Water, which grossed $6.9 million over the weekend, taking its domestic tally to $647 million, and $2.213 billion globally. The other was the 25-year old re-release of Titanic, which sailed off with $6.4 million over the three-days, pushing its North-American total to $665 million, and a running gross of $2.217 billion since it first left the dock back in 1997.
