Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy gets a new developer video

August 12, 2021 by Andrew Newton

Eidos-Montréal has today unveiled a new developer video for the upcoming Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy that was revealed last June at E3.  This new video looks into the designs of each of the core members of the heroic team of misfits.  Meet Bruno Gauthier-Leblanc, Art Director at Eidos-Montréal, in the new dev’ video below…

Each of the characters, Star-Lord (a.k.a Peter Quill), Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot, are a fresh take on the Guardians yet are all instantly recognisable and each is inspired by the wider Marvel universe and the narrative of the game.

Star-Lord, the self-proclaimed leader of the Guardians has been inspired by a rock-and-roll space pirate look with an outfit adorned with remnants of his ’80s childhood and tributes to his favourite rock-band.  Drax’ appearance is heavily influenced by his combat history, there’s lots of Katathian scarification on his body that represents his victories.  While Gamora’s design is influenced by the comic with her striking black and white suit with some deadly embellishments.

The designs of both Rocket and Groot have been connected with Rocket wearing a Groot bead in his goatee and Groot having a harness on his back for Rocket.  This connection symbolises their friendship as well as their ability to work together during battle.

Bruno Gauthier-Leblanc says: “When designing the Guardians, it was important they remained true to the narrative we had built while still being instantly recognisable as the Guardians of the Galaxy fans know and love. We combined inspiration from Marvel comic lore with our own character backstories to craft new visuals for this fun and dysfunctional family, infusing each Guardian with specific design aspects that also tie into gameplay.”

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will arrive on PC and consoles on 26th October.
