Marvel’s Thunderbolts* opens to $162 million at the global box office

May 5, 2025 by Gary Collinson

Marvel brought the curtain down on Phase Five of the MCU this weekend with the release of Thunderbolts*, the second of three releases from the studio this year after February’s Captain America: Brave New World and ahead of July’s Fantastic Four: The First Steps, and the film has kicked off its theatrical run with a global opening of $162 million.

Domestically, the Jake Schreier-directed ensemble claimed top spot with an opening weekend of $76 million, putting it slightly ahead of the likes of Ant-Man and the Wasp ($75.8 million) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($75.4 million). Internationally, it added a further $86 million from 52 markets, with China ($10.4 million), the UK ($7.7 million) and Mexico ($7.3 million) leading the way.

Although it’s numbers are down on Brave New World (which debuted with $88.8 million domestically and $192 million worldwide), the Thunderbolts* ‘brand’ obviously carries a lot less weight than Captain America, and given the positive audience and critic reactions to the film, its box office prospects for the coming weeks look promising with little in the way of serious direct competition until the arrival of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Lilo & Stitch on May 23rd.
