Masters of the Universe casts James Purefoy and Charlotte Riley as Eternia’s King and Queen

February 12, 2025 by Ricky Church

Just a day after Masters of the Universe announced several new cast members, the live-action movie adaptation has now filled out more roles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Purefoy (Rome) and Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders) as King Randor and Queen Marlena respectively, the monarchs of Eternia and parents to Prince Adam/He-Man.

Based on the 1980s Mattel toyline and animated series, Masters of the Universe follows the adventures of Prince Adam who gains a mystical sword that transforms him into He-Man, a powerful figure who is chosen to protect the universe from the forces of evil, specifically the villainous Skeletor who seeks the power inside Castle Grayskull where He-Man’s power comes from.

Purefoy’s King Randor “has no clue that his son turns into the heroic He-Man, believing him to be lazy for seemingly shirking his duties.” Riley’s Queen Marlena “develops a few suspicions” as to He-Man’s true identity.

Directed by Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings), from a script written by Chris Butler (Paranorman), Masters of the Universe will finally bring the world of the cherished Mattel action figure back to the big screen.

Masters of the Universe will star Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-at-Arms, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto.

Masters of the Universe will be released on June 5th, 2026.
