Matt Smith won’t let Morbius flop affect him: “We’re not saving lives”

August 6, 2022 by EJ Moreno

The dark cloud of Morbius is still looming all over us, but it seems like one of the film’s stars has learned to shake it off.

The film only grossed $73 million in the U.S. and came in well below the $200 million mark worldwide with just $163 million, and let’s not forget about the critical lashing it received.

However, Matt Smith feels like the Sony’s latest Marvel movie was thrown under the bus and doesn’t hold the flop too close to his heart. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Smith opened up about his career and Morbius in particular.

“Yeah, it was thrown under the bus,” Smith told Rolling Stone. “But you just have to roll with it. What else are you gonna do? It’s a film, at the end of the day, we’re not saving lives. For whatever reason, it didn’t quite work out, and… It is what it is.”

Smith seems to be getting used to the world of critical lashings. Morbius follows Terminator Genisys, which saw him starring in another box-office flop, and while Last Night In Soho was met warmly by critics, it failed to make a box office impression.

Morbius is just another flop on his feature film list, but the former Doctor Who star is still slaying the television roles and will soon be seen in HBO’s House of the Dragon, which is a prequel to the hit series Game of Thrones.

One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. While at first it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil – or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?

Morbius sees Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) directing a cast that includes Jared Leto (Suicide Squad), Adria Arjona (Pacific Rim Uprising), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Jared Harris (The Terror), Michael Keaton (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and Tyrese Gibson (Fast & Furious).
