Mattel teaming with Warner Bros. for Hot Wheels movie

February 1, 2019 by Gary Collinson

After a number of failed attempts to get a movie adaptation off the ground, Mattel is once again looking to bring Hot Wheels to the big screen, with the toy giant teaming with Warner Bros. for a live-action film based upon the iconic brand.

“Mattel Films has great momentum as it continues to execute on our commitment to bring global audiences new ways to experience the brands they love as we transform Mattel into an IP-driven, high-performing toy company,” said Ynon Kreiz, Mattel’s chairman and CEO (via THR).

Hot Wheels first launched in 1968 and has sold over 6 billion cars throughout its 50-year-history. It remains hugely popular, selling around 500 million cars per year.

A Hot Wheels movie has been in the works since 2003, with McG (Charlie’s Angels) originally attached to direct for Sony and Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) boarding an iteration at Legendary Pictures back in 2016.

Hot Wheels becomes the second Mattel-based project in the works at Warner Bros., following the news earlier this month that Margot Robbie has signed on to produce and star in the long-gestating Barbie movie for the studio.
