Matthew Lillard joins Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow

May 7, 2026 by Ricky Church

With James Gunn currently in production on Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to last summer’s hit Superman, the DC Studios co-chairman has announced a new addition to the growing cast with Matthew Lillard joining the film.

Lillard’s role is being kept under wraps, but his involvement was revealed by Deadline and later followed up by Gunn on Instagram who shared a picture of himself and the actor. Lillard and Gunn have been friends for decades after Lillard starred in the first live-action Scooby-Doo film which Gunn wrote. Lillard portrayed Shaggy and would return for the sequel as well as taking on the voice role in many Scooby-Doo animated series and movies over the past 20 years.

Man of Tomorrow will see Superman and Lex Luthor forming a reluctant partnership as the world is threatened by the villainous Brainiac, one of Superman’s main enemies who will make his live-action feature debut in the film. The next DC Universe film will be Supergirl on June 26th focusing on Milly Alcock’s Supergirl after her cameo at the end of Superman. David Corenswet will also reprise the Man of Steel in the upcoming film.

He also starred in the TV series Cross and Daredevil: Born Again and will be seen next in Mike Flanagan’s series adaptation of Stephen King’s horror classic Carrie.

Man of Tomorrow sees the return of Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., and Maria Gabriella de Faria as The Engineer. Aaron Pierre will also reprise his Lanterns role as John Stewart/Green Lantern, while Lars Eidinger will play Brainiac and Adria Arjona in an unknown role which may be Maxima or Wonder Woman.

Man of Tomorrow is set for release on July 9th, 2027.
