Matthew Vaughn in talks for Man of Steel 2, Spawn reboot will be dark and nasty, new Doctor Who trailer, critics vs. fans and more – Daily News Roundup

March 14, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Rounding up yesterday’s big news stories…

MAN OF STEEL 2 FINDS A DIRECTOR?

We’ve known for a while that Warner Bros. has been developing a sequel to Man of Steel, and if rumours are to be believed, the studio may have found a director. According to reports, comic book movie regular Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service) is in talks to direct Henry Cavill’s second solo movie; read our report here.

THE NEW GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

Sony has officially announced that it is set to reboot the Millennium movie series, with Fede Alvarez on board to direct The Girl in the Spider’s Web for release in October 2018. The studio will be recasting the lead role of Lisbeth Salander – played by Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – and a search is now underway to find an actress ahead of a September production start date. Read more here.

SPAWN WILL BE DARK AND NASTY

With R-rated superhero movies now in vogue, Todd McFarlane must be feeling somewhat confident that he might finally be able to get his long-planned Spawn reboot off the ground – and if so, he promises it will be “dark” and “nasty”. Read his comments here.

GAME OF THRONES GETS CELEBRITY GUEST STAR AND EPISODE COUNT

UFC star Conor McGregor won’t be the only celebrity cameo in the upcoming seventh season of Game of Thrones, with Ed Sheeran set to become the latest musician to make an appearance in Westeros. Meanwhile, during an appearance at SXSW, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have confirmed that next year’s eighth and final season will run for just six episodes. That means we’ve only got 13 more to go…

NEW DOCTOR WHO TRAILER MATERIALISES

The BBC has released a new trailer for the upcoming tenth series of Doctor Who, which is packed with new monsters, old foes, and even a nice little Fourth Doctor Easter egg. Watch the trailer here.

ARTICLE OF THE DAY

In the wake of near-universal negative reviews, Iron Fist star Finn Jones trotted out the old “we didn’t make this for the critics, we made it for the fans” line, completely overlooking the fact that many critics are also fans (as evidenced by the overwhelmingly positive reviews for almost everything else that Marvel has put out). If you’re interested in reading my thoughts, you can find them in my op-ed ‘Hey, Finn Jones – Critics Can Be Fans Too’, which you can read here.
