Michael Shannon emerges as frontrunner to play Cable in Deadpool 2

March 22, 2017 by Ricky Church

There have been several names floating around in regards to the role of mutant mercenary Cable in David Leitch’s Deadpool 2, the sequel to last year’s Ryan Reynolds led superhero movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nocturnal Animals actor Michael Shannon has emerged as the frontrunner for the role. This seemingly confirms a report made a couples week that Shannon was in contention for the role.

While Stranger Things‘ David Harbour is still being considered for the part, even going so far as to having a rumoured screentest with Reynolds, Shannon has moved up on the shortlist as Fox’s top choice to play Cable. This wouldn’t be the first time Shannon would have a role in a comic book film. He previously appeared in Jonah Hex alongside Josh Brolin and also starred as General Zod in Man of Steel.

While Shannon is a frontrunner, THR also says a scheduling conflict could prevent him from taking on the role. This spring he’ll be filming an indie-film What They Had alongside Hilary Swank with Elizabeth Chomko writing and directing.

Other actors who have been linked to Cable include former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, Bloodline‘s Kyle Chandler while Avatar’s Stephen Lang and Hellboy‘s Ron Perlman have been fan-favourites for the part. With the recent casting of Zazie Beetz as Domino, hopefully we’ll hear something official on Cable soon.
