Milly Alcock & Meg Donnelly circling Supergirl for DC Studios, character to debut in Superman: Legacy first

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios is beginning to take shape, starting with the Kryptonian side of things. The latest update comes in the form of a follow-up story, which had three women in the running for the role of Supergirl, but now we’re down to just two stars.

In a new story from The Hollywood Reporter, actresses Milly Alcock & Meg Donnelly have made the journey down to Atlanta to screen test for the role of Supergirl. Ahead of her own solo film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the hero will appear briefly in the 2025 Superman: Legacy from director James Gunn.

Originally, Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones, and Meg Donnelly were all in talks for the role, but only Alcock and Donnelly have made it to this next stage. Alcock is best known for playing Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon. Donnelly is already familiar with Supergirl, voicing her in the DC animated movies Legion of Superheroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One.

THR also notes that while actress and playwright Ana Nogueira will pen the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow script, there’s still no director attached as of yet. 

In the press release when James Gunn first announced the DCU slate, he noted the Supergirl project will be based on Tom King’s Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow, stating: “In our series, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer.

 
Superman: Legacy is scheduled to open in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
