Netflix could save Designated Survivor following cancellation at ABC

May 16, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Last week, ABC announced a number of TV cancellations, including the Kiefer Sutherland-headlined political conspiracy drama Designated Survivor.

The news was somewhat surprising, as the show had been expected to receive a season three renewal; although live ratings weren’t particularly strong, its delayed viewing numbers were impressive, and it had been profitable for the network thanks to its international distribution deal with Netflix.

Well, according to Deadline, it seems that Netflix may come to the series’ rescue, with producers eOne in talks with the streaming giant about picking up the thriller for a third season. However, the site notes that one sticking block may be the fact that Netflix rival Hulu has the US VOD rights to the first two seasons, something which the parties are looking to untangle.

Designated Survivor sees Sutherland as Thomas Kirkman, a politician who suddenly finds himself elevated to the position of President when at attack on the United States Capitol building kills everyone else in the line of succession. Also featuring in the cast are Natasha McElhone, Adan Canto, Italia Ricci, LaMonica Garrett, Tanner Buchanan, Kal Penn, Maggie Q and Paulo Costanzo.
