New 16-Bit shoot ‘em up Earthion coming to PC, consoles and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis

May 7, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Limited Run Games has announced that the brand-new 16-bit shoot ’em up Earthion will be coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Playstation 5 later this year. What’s even better is that they will also be releasing the game on a physical cartridge for the Sega Mega Drive (or Genesis, to our American chums).  Watch the new announcement trailer below to see how great the game’s looking…

Developed by Japanese developer Ancient Corporation, studio of the renowned video game composer Yuzo Koshiro (beloved for his amazing soundtrack for Streets of Rage), Earthion will put players in the shoes of space fighter pilot Azusa Takahashi as he fights his way through eight chaotic levels in traditional side-scrolling fashion. Each level has its own unique environment, their own enemies and epic, screen-filling bosses.

Earthion takes Koshiro back to his 16-bit roots as the composer of 27 original tracks that players can listen to as they blast enemies to smithereens. Yuzo Koshiro isn’t the only legend on the team, there’s also Makoto Wada (Gotta Protectors, Royal Anapoko Academy) and artist Mitsuhiro Arita (illustrator for the Pokémon Trading Card Game).

If scanlines for recreating that retro look on your modern TV is your thing, then Earthion features highly customisable scanline configurations.

Featuring:

  • 8 stages of retro style arcade action with unique environments, enemies and bosses.
  • 27 original tracks and a soundscape created by Yuzo Koshiro.
  • Multiple difficulty levels and a challenge mode.
  • Configurable scanlines and display settings for CRT emulation.
  • Level password system.
  • Music player mode.
  • Bonus playable demos from the game’s development.
  • Online leaderboards – but not for the Mega Drive version.

Look out for Earthion coming to PC, consoles and the Mega Drive/Genesis later this year.
