Nintendo Switch 2 & Mario Kart World Launch Today – Here’s What You Need to Know

June 5, 2025 by Andrew Newton

It’s finally arrived, Nintendo just released the Switch 2, and it’s bringing some serious upgrades alongside the biggest Mario Kart game ever made. Today marks the launch of Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart World, along with over 20 new titles ready to supercharge your gaming lineup.

The Switch 2 is Nintendo’s first new console in eight years, but it’s more than just a hardware refresh. You’re getting a larger, crisper 7.9-inch HD screen, upgraded CPU/GPU for smoother performance, Joy-Con 2 controllers that magnetically attach (and even double as mouse-like controls), and 256GB of built-in storage (8x that of the original Switch). It also includes spatial 3D audio, USB-C ports top and bottom, and a redesigned dock that supports up to 4K output or 120 fps gameplay.

On the social side of things, GameChat is making its debut, a built-in voice chat feature that lets you talk with up to 12 friends while playing, plus optional video chat for those with a supported USB-C camera.

As for Mario Kart World, it’s a global playground where the world becomes your racetrack. With up to 24 drivers at once, reimagined game modes, massive online features, fresh mechanics and a vast interconnected environment, this is the most ambitious Mario Kart yet.

Nintendo’s also rolling out free updates for select Switch games to take advantage of the new system. Features like GameShare will let friends join in even if they don’t own the game.

If you have a spare £395.99 then head on over to your retailer and get ready to play “All Together, Anytime, Anywhere” as the next era of Nintendo gaming has officially begun.
