Obi-Wan Kenobi series set 8 years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

September 1, 2019 by Gary Collinson

After the confirmation at last weekend’s D23 Expo than Ewan McGregor will be donning his Jedi robes once again to reprise the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for a live-action Star Wars series on Disney+, the official Star Wars site has now revealed where the show will fall in the Saga’s timeline.

In a post wrapping up all of the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ projects (which includes The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Clone Wars), it is stated that the as-yet-untitled series will “place eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, where we last saw Obi-Wan delivering the infant Luke Skywalker to his Tatooine homestead.”

That places the show some eleven years prior to Alec Guinness’ portrayal in Episode IV – A New Hope, and nine years before Obi-Wan’s final showdown with Darth Maul in Star Wars Rebels, so assuming the series sticks with established canon we shouldn’t expect to see a live-action version of this confrontation playing out.

The timeframe does open the door for a reunion between Obi-Wan and his fallen apprentice Darth Vader; while it’s assumed that their duel in A New Hope is the first time the two former friends have met since Revenge of the Sith, that’s never officially been established. But, even without an appearance from the Dark Lord of the Sith, we should expect Vader to loom large over the series as Obi-Wan comes to terms with the failure of the Jedi and Anakin’s fall to the dark side.
