Paul Bettany teases Avengers: Age of Ultron’s “enormous” scale

January 23, 2015 by James Garcia

Paul Bettany, who has played Tony Stark’s A.I. butler J.A.R.V.I.S. multiple times in the Marvel cinematic universe, will be showing up in the flesh for Avengers: Age of Ultron, as popular character and android The Vision. We still know very little about his role, and have yet to see him in any of the footage that’s been released, but judging by these new comments, Bettany will be involved in some pretty big action scenes.

Bettany spoke with RadioTimes.com, and teased Age of Ultron‘s massive scale:

“I’ve never been on a bigger set on my entire life than in The Avengers {Age of Ultron]. One [part] seemed to be the corner of a town, with helicopter cameras, and drone cameras flying about. I just haven’t seen anything that big, so it was like being a kid on a film set again. This is the biggest thing Marvel have ever done. It was enormous. I remember, we were at Comic-con, and they showed a portion of the footage, and I was just gobsmacked. And I looked down the row and every one of the Avengers was the same.”

Bettany also talked a bit about what it was like transitioning from the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. to a full-fledged character:

“I love doing it. It’s really nice to have a balance in all this. To go from a movie I was making where we couldn’t afford two cameras, to a movie where there’s helicopters with cameras in. It was a lot of fun. I’ve been to Comic-con like 5 times, and I went this last time as part of the Avengers, and it was… just nuts. It was crazy, Those fans go CRAZY. And that was strange.”

As far as how the role may effect his future work, Bettany notes that he never really thought about being forever associated with The Vision:

“I hadn’t really thought about it. I’m feeling quite daunted now that you’ve said it. I look really different in real life. I’m red and android in the film. So I don’t know, hopefully that’ll help.”

Avengers: Age of Ultron is set for release in the UK on April 24th 2015 and North America on May 1st 2015, with Joss Whedon directing a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (The Incredible Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Paul Bettany (JARVIS / The Vision), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), James Spader (Ultron), Thomas Kretschmann (Baron Strucker), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Claudia Kim (Dr. Cho) and Andy Serkis in an as-yet-unconfirmed role, thought to be that of Uylsses Klaw.
