Portlandia creator tapped to direct Pokémon: Detective Pikachu sequel

March 4, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Detective Pikachu 2 is on the way, and the Pokemon adaptation just got a bit quirkier.

Deadline reports that Portlandia’s Jonathan Krisel is in talks to helm the sequel, a follow-up to Legendary’s 2019 box office hit. The outlet notes that Krisel is currently negotiating to direct based on a script by screenwriter Chris Galletta (The Kings of Summer).

2019’s Pokemon: Detective Pikachu was a surprise hit. The franchise is beloved by many, but the success rate of video games to movies is pretty low. Detective Pikachu broke that stigma as the film grossed more than $430 million worldwide and was beloved by audiences and critics.

The 2019 film starred Ryan Reynolds, Ken Watanabe, Justice Smith, and Kathryn Newton. While there’s no confirmation now, reports say Reynolds will have some part to play in the upcoming sequel.

Jonathan Krisel is best known for co-creating, writing, and executive producing Portlandia and co-creating, directing, and writing Baskets starring Zach Galifianakis for FX. The Detective Pikachu sequel is one of Krisel’s first feature films, alongside an in-development adaptation of Sesame Street.
