Reed Morano linked with Star Wars after meeting with Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy

January 21, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in October, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that we will see a female director at the helm of a Star Wars movie at some point, and with the studio now busy planning the next decade of Star Wars movies, it seems we may have an idea of one female filmmaker on the Lucasfilm shortlist.

Speaking to THR, Emmy Award-winning director Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale) has confirmed that she was called in to Lucasfilm to have a meeting with Kennedy.

“I guess she was watching with her daughter and then called people and was like, ‘Who’s this Reed person?’ She probably thought I was a guy because of my name. She’s amazing. We’re talking about adventure movies, and I’m not even remembering that she produced Goonies. Any movie that I put my finger on that I loved when I was growing up was a movie that she produced. Anyway, it was a great meeting. Obviously, I can’t say anything about what else we were talking about.”

So, what could they have been talking about? Well, seeing as the only non-Star Wars project on their slate for the foreseeable future is Indiana Jones 5, and Steven Spielberg is returning for that, it kind of limits the possibilities…

An acclaimed cinematographer, Morano made her feature directorial debut on 2015’s Meadowland, and has directed episodes of Halt and Catch Fire and Billions in addition to her work on The Handmaid’s Tale. She is currently shooting The Rhythm Section, an action thriller starring Blake Lively and Jude Law.
