Robert Downey Jr. still hoping to make Sherlock Holmes 3

March 11, 2018 by Gary Collinson

For a time in 2016, it looked as though Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and director Guy Ritchie would be reuniting for a third instalment of the Sherlock Holmes movie series, only for the project to seemingly fizzle out.

While we’ve had nothing in the way of updates since, Downey has now revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he still hopes to return as Arthur Conan Doyle’s master detective:

“I’m having a good time [doing The Voyage of Doctor Doolittle], though I decided to give myself, like, 40 additional challenges, like a Welsh accent — which even Welsh people say is hard to do,” said Downey when asked about his post-Avengers: Infinity War plans. “Then there’s all this stuff down the pike. We’re looking at another Sherlock Holmes, we’re developing Perry Mason for HBO. I still want to do Pinocchio.”

The last we heard, Warner Bros. had hired a writers room featuring the likes of Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), Justin Malen (Baywatch), Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Geneva Dworet-Robertson (Tomb Raider) and Kieran Fitzgerald (Snowden) to shape the story and script for Sherlock Holmes 3, while producer Joel Silver even suggested we could get multiple sequels.

The first Sherlock Holmes movie was released in 2009 and grossed almost $525 million worldwide. A sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, followed in 2011 and pulled in $545 million at the box office.
