Robert Downey Jr. to play Tony Stark in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Michael Keaton no longer in talks

April 21, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Earlier this month Kevin Feige confirmed that the upcoming Spider-Man reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming would feature characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to the film, where he’ll reprise the role of Tony Stark.

Homecoming will reunite Downey with his Captain America: Civil War co-star Tom Holland, who has taken on the role of the wall-crawler for his MCU incarnation and makes his debut in Civil War. The Sony and Marvel co-production will mark Downey’s eighth outing as Stark, and he is also signed up to take that tally to ten with Avengers: Infinity War – Part I and Avengers: Infinity War – Part II.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is being directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car) and also stars Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler) as Aunt May alongside Zendaya (K.C. Undercover),  Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Laura Harrier (One Life to Live). Michael Keaton (Batman) has been rumoured to be in talks to portray a villain.

UPDATE: Deadline is reporting that Michael Keaton is no longer in talks, and won’t be appearing in the film.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set for release on July 7th, 2017.
