Rumour: Avatar screenwriter working on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic movie

June 1, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Back in April, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the studio is looking to explore the Old Republic era inside the new Star Wars canon with early development underway on a Knights of the Old Republic project, and now it seems we may have some additional details.

According to a report from Buzzfeed, Avatar and Shutter Island screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis has been writing a screenplay for a Knights of the Old Republic movie and is now close to completing the script.

First explored in the acclaimed 2003 RPG video game from BioWare and LucasArts before spinning out into further games, books and comics, KOTOR takes place some 4000 years before the rise of the Galactic Empire as the Sith Empire launch a war against the Republic and its Jedi Knight protectors.

Disney and Lucasfilm recently set release dates for three Star Wars movies in December 2022, December 2024 and December 2026, confirming that the 2022 release will be directed by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

As it happens, it has been rumoured previously that Benioff and Weiss’ project (thought to be a trilogy), will be set during The Old Republic, and so it’s certainly possible that Kalogridis could be working on the very same project. Unfortunately, it’s probably unlikely that we’ll get any official word on the next Star Wars films until after the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker this December.
