Rumour: Doctor Aphra set for Star Wars series on Disney+

November 30, 2019 by Gary Collinson

The Star Wars franchise may be about to go on hiatus on the big screen following the release of next month’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but we’re still going to get our fix of the galaxy far, far away courtesy of the Disney+ streaming service.

Along with The Mandalorian, which is currently airing its first season (and production already underway on season 2), Lucasfilm has the Ewan McGregor-headlined Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Rogue One spinoff starring Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor in the pipeline.

Well, if a rumour from Star Wars Unity is to be believed, we may soon be able to add another project to that list, as the site is claiming that the fan favourite comic book character Doctor Aphra is being lined up for a live-action outing, although it’s unclear whether this would be her own solo series, or a role in another show.

If you haven’t been reading Marvel’s Star Wars comics, then you may be unfamiliar with the character of Doctor Aphra, who was introduced in 2015’s Star Wars: Darth Vader #3  was an immediate hit with readers, eventually becoming the first non-film character to headline her own Star Wars comic book series (the title is set to be relaunched in April 2020).

Described as “morally bankrupt, in-over-her-head criminal archaeologist with an expert knowledge of droid and weapons technologies”, Doctor Aphra found herself recruited by Darth Vader following the Battle of Yavin, but was forced to fake her own death after running afoul of the Dark Lord of the Sith. She then roams the galaxy with her two assassin droid companions 0-0-0 and BT-1, trading in ill-gotten artifacts in an attempt to pay off her debts to the Wookiee bounty hunter Black Krrantan.
