Rumour: Funko animated movie in development featuring characters from Marvel, DC, Star Wars and more

January 28, 2019 by Gary Collinson

According to SuperBroMovies writer Daniel Richtman, Warner Animation Group is looking to replicate the success of the LEGO Movie franchise with a new animated feature based upon Funko’s hugely popular Pop! Vinyl line.

As you can see from the above image, it appears that WAG intends on starting production on the Funko (or Funkoville) movie at some point this year. Given the enormous popularity of the little action figures, this news probably isn’t too surprising; however, Richtman then goes on to claim that the film will feature characters from a host of popular IPs, including our very first big screen crossover between Marvel and DC.

Some characters already confirmed for the Funko movie: Darth Vader, Deadpool, Hellboy, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Care Bears, My Little Pony.

Also Hello Kitty.

Warner Bros. – the parent company of DC Entertainment – was able to get the rights to Star Wars characters from Disney for The LEGO Movie, but Marvel characters were nowhere to be found, despite The LEGO Group having a licensed Marvel Super Heroes theme.

It would certainly be surprising if Marvel essentially handed over control of any of its characters to its rivals; however, the only Marvel character mentioned in the tweets is Deadpool, whose feature film rights are held by 20th Century Fox (for the time being, anyway). Whether Fox’s X-Men deal allows the studio to effectively sub-license characters remains to be seen, but perhaps we’re not so far away from a Marvel and DC crossover (of sorts) after all…
