Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot adds Himesh Patel as male lead

March 27, 2026 by Ricky Church

A few weeks after Danielle Deadwyler was cast in the lead female role of Sinners director Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot, the lead male role has now been filled with Himesh Patel (Yesterday) joining the upcoming series.

Much like the original series, the reboot will see two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.

Deadwyler and Patel take over as the lead FBI agents from David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson who famously played agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they investigated strange and supernatural cases while uncovering a vast global conspiracy involving extraterrestrial life. The series ran from 1993 – 2002 with a feature film released during its run followed by a second feature in 2008 and two event seasons in 2016 and 2018.

Hulu has given The X-Files reboot a pilot order which Coogler is writing and directing. Jennifer Yale (The Copenhagen Test) will serve as showrunner and executive produce with Coogler and X-Files creator Chris Carter.

Patel will be next seen in Christopher Nolan’s anticipated Greek epic The Odyssey, reuniting with the director after starring in Tenet, as well as Netflix’s Enola Holmes 3 where he will reprise his cameo from the second film as Sherlock Holmes’ faithful partner and friend Dr. John Watson.
