Ryan Reynolds’ Dragon’s Lair movie finds its director in James Bobin

June 23, 2025 by Gary Collinson

It’s been more than five years since it was announced that Ryan Reynolds would be teaming with Netflix to produce a live-action adaptation of the classic 80s video game Dragon’s Lair, and now the project has finally taken a major step forward with the news from THR that James Bobin has signed on to direct the film.

Dragon’s Lair was originally released in arcades back in 1983 and was revolutionary for its use of LaserDisc technology which allowed the game to incorporate high quality animation, delivered courtesy of legendary animator Don Bluth. It sees the playing stepping to the occasionally clumsy shoes of Dirk the Daring, a valiant knight on a quest to rescue a fair princess from the clutches of an evil dragon.

Bobin is best known for his 2011 feature film The Muppets and its 2014 sequel Muppets Most Wanted,; he’s since went on to direct Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass and Paramount’s Dora and the Lost City of Gold, along with episodes of the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

While Ryan Reynolds is producing the movie adaptation, it’s understood that he isn’t attached to the lead role as Dirk the Daring, nor is he expected to star at this point. However, with a director now on board, hopefully we’ll finally get some movement.
