Sam Raimi says he “messed up plenty” with “awful” Spider-Man 3

December 31, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Before Marc Webb brought the Spider-Man franchise to its knees this year with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the majority of vitriol from Spidey fans was reserved for the third movie in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, 2007’s Spider-Man 3. Now Raimi himself has spoken about the disappointing threequel during a chat with the Nerdist podcast, admitting that he “messed up plenty” when it came to the film and describing it as “awful”…

“Each and every one of those Spider-Man movies were pretty damn challenging. I messed up plenty with the third Spider-Man, so people hated me for years — they still hate me for it. It’s a movie that just didn’t work very well. I tried to make it work, but I didn’t really believe in all the characters, so that couldn’t be hidden from people who loved Spider-Man. If the director doesn’t love something, it’s wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it. I think [raising the stakes after Spider-Man 2] was the thinking going into it, and I think that’s what doomed us. I should’ve just stuck with the characters and the relationships and progressed them to the next step and not tried to top the bar… I don’t think ‘bad’ is the right word. Awful!”

Is he right? Is Spider-Man 3 awful? And how does it stack up against The Amazing Spider-Man 2?
