Saved By the Bell sequel series announced, will feature Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez

September 17, 2019 by Gary Collinson

NBC Universal has announced that a Saved By the Bell reboot is coming to its newly-unveiled Peacock streaming service, with original cast members Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie Spano) and Mario Lopez (A.C. Slater) on board to reprise their roles and talks underway with other cast members, including Mark-Paul Gosselaar.

As per THR, the reboot has been written by Tracey Wigfield (30 Rock, Great News) who will serve as showrunner as well as executive producing alongside Berkley, Lopez, and original series creator Peter Engel.

The straight-to-series comedy will explore “what happens when California Gov. Zack Morris (Gosselaar’s role) gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools and proposes the affected students be sent to the highest-performing schools in the state — including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over-privileged Bayside kids a much-needed and hilarious dose of reality.”

The original Saved By the Bell ran for four seasons on NBC between 1989 and 1993 and saw Berkley, Lopez and Gosselaar starring alongside Dustin Diamond, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen and Lark Voorhies. The show spawned two spinoffs, Saved by the Bell: The College Years and Saved by the Bell: The New Class.
