Scarlett Johansson calls Marvel’s Black Widow a “standalone franchise”

July 2, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Scarlett Johansson, the star of Black Widow, has called the upcoming movie a “standalone franchise”.

Fans had been calling for a Black Widow film for years and they finally got their wish but only after the character was killed off in the MCU.

The film is set before the events of Avengers: Infinity War, however, and sees Scarlett Johansson starring in the film with Florence Pugh. Interestingly, recent remarks from Johansson suggest that this might not be a one-off movie.

A fan account for the actress shared a clip of Johansson praising co-star Pugh and using the term “standalone franchise” to describe the movie:

“I am very excited about Florence Pugh. She is my co-star in the Black Widow standalone franchise, and I’m, you know, like learning from her,”

While this may just be Johansson using the wrong term and not actually meaning ‘franchise’, it could suggest there is scope and possible plans in place for Black Widow to spawn future installments – perhaps featuring Florence Pugh as well. We will have to wait and see, but let us know in the comments or on our social channels if you’d be excited about more Black Widow movies…

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on October 28th in the UK and on November 6th in North America.
