Scarlett Johansson says she won’t return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

April 24, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Scarlett Johansson has closed the door on her time with Marvel Studios.

As we know, Johansson played Black Widow for a decade, starting in Iron Man 2 and starring in six other entries before her character died in Avengers: Endgame. Though, she did get one more film after that, her only solo outing, which was released simultaneously in theaters and through Disney+ with Premier Access during the pandemic.

That release strategy caused some backlash between Disney and Scarlett Johansson, which led to a lawsuit from the actress, and later, the two parties settled. As time passed and a reported project between the pair was teased, Johansson’s recent comments on The Goop Podcast imply she’s done with all of it.

During a recent interview with Gwyneth Paltrow on The Goop Podcast, Johansson tells her fellow Marvel actor that her time with the MCU is over, saying, “I’m done. Chapter is over. I kind of did all that I had to do.”

She adds, “Also, coming back and playing a character again and again like that over a decade of time is such a unique experience… [Kevin Feige] is such a lover of cinema, storytelling. He really is a fan.”

Even with the lawsuit and less-than-stellar reception, Johansson looks back at it fondly, describing it like early days as a college experience. “I was like 26 years old. I was single; it was fun,” says the actress. She talks about her first outing in the MCU, which she did alongside Paltrow.

“You were so nice to me on that movie. I was so petrified. You were so nice to me! You could’ve been awful. I was so out of my comfort zone on that movie. I’d never done anything like that before. Plus, you had established such deep friendships.”

With a positive experience and the rest of her career ahead of her, Johansson seems resolved, and we may be done with that version of Black Widow for some time.

Scarlett Johansson is set to appear in this year’s Asteroid City, the new film by Wes Anderson. She’ll star alongside an all-star cast that includes Jason Schwartzman, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Steve Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, and Jeff Goldblum.

Asteroid City will release on June 23rd, and Black Widow is streaming now on Disney+.
