Searching sequel will be directed by the editors of the first film, will feature new characters

January 14, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Last year, it was announced that Sony Pictures’ Stage 6 Films is working on a sequel to the 2018 surprise hit, Searching, and now, the upcoming project has found its directors.

According to Deadline, the sequel will be the directorial debut for Will Merrick and Nick Johnson, who served on the editorial team on the Aneesh Chaganty-directed Hulu thriller Run, as well as the original 2018 Searching. The project is set to begin production sometime in the Spring.

Although Searching 2‘s plot is still being kept under wraps, the outlet has confirmed that the sequel will feature a brand-new set of characters in an evolved Screenlife thriller format where the story plays out on the screen of the character’s devices.

“With such restrictive visual parameters, a movie like Searching 2 requires a fresh visual style to separate it from the original,” Searching director Aneesh Chaganty said. “I’ve contributed what I can to this growing sub-genre. But if there’s anyone on the planet with the potential to take it even further, it’s Nick and Will, who were there from the beginning.”

The original film, which was directed by Aneesh Chaganty and co-wrote by Sev Ohanian, focused on a father (John Cho) desperately searching for his missing 16-year-old daughter Margot (Michelle La) aided by a police detective played by Debra Messing. Searching made use of computer screens, e-mail exchanges, phone screens, Skype calls, Facebook messages, and more to turn the film into an original whodunnit and bring the investigation to life by revealing dark secrets throughout.
