Simon Kinberg distances X-Men from Fantastic Four

August 7, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Last month, director Bryan Singer confirmed the ongoing speculation that 20th Century Fox has plans to cross its X-Men universe over with Fantastic Four in an effort to create a shared continuity akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Well, in the wake of absolutely horrendous reviews and word of mouth for Fantastic Four, it now appears that producers Simon Kinberg and Hutch Parker are attempting to distance the reboot from the mutant superhero series.

“They exist in parallel universes,” Kinberg and Parker have told the New York Daily News. “The Fantastic 4 live in a world without mutants. And the X-Men live in a world without the Fantastic 4. Crossing them over would be challenging but we sure would love to see all those actors together, the way we had them on stage at (San Diego) Comic Con.”

Given that the plot of Fantastic Four revolves around interdimensional travel, it wouldn’t be that much of a challenge to work out a believable way to bring the two universes together, but unless the reboot exceeds all expectations box office wise (which looks highly unlikely at this point), it’s understandable why the studio is making moves to keep the two franchises as far apart as possible.

Fantastic Four is in theaters now, and it features a cast that includes Miles Teller (Whiplash) as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Kate Mara (House of Cards) as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as Doctor Doom, Reg E. Cathey (House of Cards) as Dr. Storm, and Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk) as Harvey Elder/Mole Man. Listen to the Flickering Myth Podcast review of the movie using the player below:
