Sony sets release dates for Silver & Black, Sicario 2 and more

August 12, 2017 by Justin Cook

Hours ago, Sony decided to announce release dates for a number of films on its slate, all of which are due out in 2018 and 2019.

Among the recently dated films, the most noteworthy news is that the sophomore effort in Sony’s Marvel Universe (2018’s Venom will be the lead-off film) will, in fact, be titled Silver & Black and is due out on February 8th, 2019.

That release date is interesting for a couple reasons; first off, it’s currently scheduled to be the first superhero movie release of 2019, which will surely be another busy year for the genre. Secondly, it’s arriving just a month before Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel, meaning that we’ll be getting two major female-led superhero movies within a few weeks of one another.

The cast has yet to be announced, but the film will team up mercenary Silver Sable (Silver Sablinova) with burglar Black Cat (Felicia Hardy). Gina Prince-Bythewood will direct and rewrite a script from Thor: Ragnarok’s Christopher Yost.

In other news, Stefano Sollima’s Soldado, the sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s haunting crime drama Sicario, has been slated for June 29th, 2018, taking that date from Barbie, which is moving to August 8th, 2018. For the former, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin will return; the latter is eyeing Anne Hathaway to star.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly will reunite as co-stars for the first time since Step Brothers for Holmes and Watson on November 9th, 2018. The film moved away from its August 3rd, 2018 release date, where it would have gone up against The Predator and Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral.

Bad Boys for Life, the Joe Carnahan-directed third installment in the Bad Boys franchise, has been taken off of Sony’s schedule for now after being slotted for November 9th, 2018. The movie is still on its way, however, with Deadline claiming that “the script is still being worked on and that Will Smith still is interested.”

Lastly, the studio also scheduled Breaking Bad and Westworld director Michelle MacLaren’s feature film debut, The Nightingale, for January 25, 2019, pushing it back from August 10th, 2018.
