Sony’s shared Spider-Man spinoff universe is officially titled the SPUMC

May 4, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Back in 2016  Sony announced that it would be launch its own Marvel cinematic universe utilising the library of Spider-Man supporting characters and villains, and while some fans have been informally referring to this as the ‘Spider-Verse’, it’s been believed that the official title used by the studio is the rather clunky ‘Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters’.

Some confusion arose last week however when the official Spider-Man movie social media accounts shared a tweet making reference to the ‘Spider-Man Universe of Characters’, leading IGN to seek clarification from the Sony with regards to the whole ‘Universe of Characters’.

Well, as it turns out, the ‘Spider-Man Universe of Characters’ covers the Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland movies, while the shared spinoff universe which launched in 2018 with Venom is officially titled (the even clunkier) ‘Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters’ (or SPUMC, for short).

Sony had planned on expanding the SPUMC with two new instalments this year in the Jared Leto-headlined Morbius and Venom sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage, although both of these have now been pushed back to 2021 because of the global health crisis. The studio is believed to have a number of other potential projects in development, including films based upon Kraven the Hunter, Spider-Woman, Mysterio, Nightwatch, The Sinister Six, Madame Web, Solo and Man-Wolf.

What do you make of the name for Sony’s Marvel cinematic universe? Are you looking forward to more of the SPUMC? Let us know your thoughts in the comments or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
