Spiral director says the movie feels more like Se7en than Saw

January 21, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Saw is set to make its return this year with Spiral: From the Book of Saw, a new entry in the long-running horror franchise and based on an original concept by Chris Rock, who also leads the cast alongside Samuel L. Jackson.

It’s certainly an unlikely but interesting direction for the series to go, and according to director Darren Lynn Bousman, who is making his return to the franchise after helming Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV, Spiral will be much more akin to David Fincher’s Se7en than the gore-soaked horror of the previous films.

“Chris came in with a thriller concept,” states Bousman. “He pitched this very elaborate, dense idea. We wanted it to feel much more like Se7en. But it has so many ties to the mythos of Saw… I was a younger person [on the earlier films]. Gore and violence was the gimmick, I think. Gore and violence is no longer a gimmick – it just serves the story. This is much more about character, tension and fear.”

A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw stars Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella, and Marisol Nichols, with Darren Lynn Bousman returning to the world of Jigsaw for the ninth installment. It is set for release on May 21st, 2021.
