Star Wars: Episode VIII to start shooting this month

September 9, 2015 by Gary Collinson

We might still be a few months away from the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it seems that Disney and Lucasilm will kick off production on the next instalment of the Sequel Trilogy this month, with cameras set to roll on the Irish island of Skellig Michael for two to four as filming on Star Wars: Episode VIII gets underway.

Earlier in the week, Ireland’s Minister for Arts and Heritage Heather Humphries revealed that Lucasfilm would be returning to Skellig Michael, prompting speculation that J.J. Abrams could be returning to the island for some last minute reshoots on The Force Awakens. However, Lucasfilm has now confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the scenes will be for Episode VIII, which is being directed by Rian Johnson (Looper).

Star Wars: Episode VIII is slated for release on May 26th 2017, with Benicio Del Toro joining the cast for a villain role. As yet, there’s no word on returning cast members, although you’d assume the majority of those who survive The Force Awakens will be back for the next chapter.
